Types of Dreams in Islam
There are 3 types of dreams in Islam-
- Good Dreams: These dreams are directly connected to Allah. They are peaceful; they bring good news and keep our hearts fulfilled when we wake up.
- Nightmares: These are often from Shaitan. Shaitan wants humans to be scared, sad, and anxious. There is no reality in these dreams.
- Subconscious Thoughts: These dreams are often about the things that go through our minds all day, like stress, worry, or a horror movie we watch, leading to being in our dream.
Steps to Follow Whenever You Get Bad Dreams
Follow these 5 easy steps if you wake up suddenly from a bad dream-
- Spit lightly to your left side 3 times (Taffl): Make three gentle spitting gestures (dry breath with no actual saliva) over your left shoulder to reject Shaytan’s whisperings.
- Seek refuge in Allah 3 times: Say-
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ هَٰذِهِ الرُّؤْيَا
A‘oodhu billaahi minash-shaytaanir-rajeemi wa min sharri haadhihir-ru’yaa
(I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan and from the evil of this dream).
- Turn over and switch sleeping sides: If you were sleeping on your right side, switch to your left, or vice versa (Sahih Muslim). This physically interrupts the sleep state and mental loop.
- Never disclose the dream to anyone: The Prophet explicitly commanded: “Do not tell it to anyone, and it will not harm you” (Sahih al-Bukhari). Mentioning it gives life to Shaytan’s deceit.
- Get up and pray if distress lingers: If your heart remains agitated, get out of bed, perform fresh Wudu, and offer 2 voluntary units of prayer (Nafl Salah).
